Computer Science Majors Pass Networking Certification
Four computer science majors from Southwestern recently took and passed a nationally recognized networking certification exam, the Comp TIA Network+ Exam.
The Comp TIA Network+ Exam covers network technologies, installation and configuration, media and topologies, management, and security. This certification can give holders an added edge in securing jobs such as network administrator, network technician, network installer, help desk technician, and IT cable installer.
The Comp TIA Network+ certification is the sign of a qualified networking professional and one of several certifications under consideration for use instead of the traditional the departmental exit exam. “We had at one time done exit exams that really had no value to the students, but this was a certification that they carry with them when they leave,” says Daryl Thomas, professor and chair of the computer science department. “This certification shows that the students who have passed reached a certain level of professional competency.”
The computer science department is currently exploring options of opening up exam opportunities for other areas of certification beyond networking. “The ideal situation will be that when our students graduate they will have some sort of certification to be able to use as part of a portfolio to show competency over and above their bachelor’s degrees,” says Thomas.
