88.3 The Journey Applies for New Tower (updated)

88.3 KJRN The Journey is preparing to build new tower that will replace their 27-year-old antenna after they recently completed an engineering study with two outside firms and sent a formal application to the FCC.

Since Southwestern’s on-campus FM station has grown from 35,000 to 95,000 listeners in the past year, a new antenna for The Journey is in order.  The new 350-foot tall tower will be 167 feet taller than their current one, which is 183 feet tall.

“The new tower will lift our signal above the hills and ridges that affect our signal now,” says Mike Agee, general manager of 88.3 The Journey.  “Our engineering study tells us that the new tower will add several hundred thousand people to our coverage area, which is always a good thing for a radio station.”

In addition to getting a new tower, The Journey will be getting new technology, which will improve the quality of their broadcast.

“The new antenna gives us a chance to replace the component with the latest technology,” says Agee.  “So once again, we will cover our entire coverage area with signal quality.  This means not only will we add people to the potential audience with a taller tower, those who can hear us now should hear a better signal.”

“After we have the construction permit from the FCC, it will take us about 60 days, weather permitting, to build the new tower and hang the antenna,” says Agee.  The Journey is actively fundraising $47,000 for the manufacture and installation of the new antenna.
