Student Receives $2,400 UPS Scholarship
Jacob Carvalho, a sophomore at Southwestern Adventist University, will receive a $2,400 UPS Scholarship provided through the ICUT Foundation. Jacob is the son of Laurie and Dana Wood and Vincent Carvalho of Healdsburg, CA, and a 2011 graduate of Rio Lindo Adventist Academy.
Majoring in business administration at Southwestern, Carvalho has a strong work ethic and is a problem solver. These traits help him overcome some of the daily challenges of living with cerebral palsy. His passion and interest gravitate toward the hospitality industry.
“I really appreciate this scholarship that helps me attend Southwestern. I absolutely love it here. This is the friendliest school I’ve ever attended or visited. My professors are accessible, caring, and knowledgeable. Both professors and students bend over backwards to help me be successful,” says Carvalho.
The ICUT Foundation is a 510(c) (3) charitable organization operated by the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, a statewide association for private colleges and universities. ICUT Foundation is an affiliate of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). Since 1985, The UPS Foundation has funded over $2.1 million in scholarships for Texas students. At the national level, CIC teams up with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS Scholarship. This year, CIC awarded nearly $1.5 million in scholarships from its UPS Educational Endowment Fund to private institutions of higher learning across the nation, including a grant of $86,400 to the ICUT Foundation. The college or university awards these scholarships based on the students’ academic achievement and financial need.
“Through this national scholarship program, CIC and UPS are delighted to make it possible for 609 deserving young men and women to attend the private college or university of their choice,” said Richard Ekman, president of CIC. “By directly assisting students with significant financial need, CIC and UPS are helping a new generation of students achieve their dreams of a college education.”
