Southwestern Adopts New School Song
Southwestern Adventist University has a new school song. The new song was written by sophomore Avram Neal, who hopes it will unite the campus with love for Southwestern.
The song was chosen out of many, as part of a competition last semester. As a reward for winning, Avram gets a free room at the men’s residence hall for a year. A committee from administration and the musical faculty at Southwestern chose him as the winner.
“We’ve been needing a lively school song for a long time,” says Eric Anderson, president. “Now I think we’ve got something people will really sing.”
The song is based off of the acronym used at freshmen orientation each year, CORE, Character Opportunity Responsibility Eternity. It’s composed to the tune of “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”
Over the years, school songs have come and gone. “Our College,” “Keene Forever,” and “To Thee, SUC,” are just a few past tunes. There have also been informal songs that students created for fun. Some songs became more popular others.
Cheesy though they may be, they convey pride and spirit for Southwestern. This song will hopefully catch on and be sung at games and events throughout the year.
“I’m surprised that I won,” says Neal. “I know I can write, but always believed that there would be someone better than me.”
