Concert Slated To Honor Memorial Scholarship
A concert is being held in honor of the Dale Heinrich Memorial Scholarship. It takes place on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. in the Mabee Center. Refreshments will be served at 5:30.
Each year, this scholarship is offered to a different musically talented student at Southwestern. This is its 25th anniversary year. The concert will feature seven recipients on violin, piano and voice.
Russell Chin, one of the performers, received the scholarship in 1989. He was the first recipient. Others who will perform are Benny Lee, recipient in 1990, Ingo Sorke, recipient in 1991, Neidy Morales in 1993, Milton Retamozo in 1994, Jonathan Castillo, Jorge Rico and Megan Spivey from 2007 and Jorge Rico from 2008.
“Benny and I thought it would be cool to highlight the 25th year,” said Chin. “It’s a great scholarship and it’s great to see people involved in music.”
Heinrich was a music student at Southwestern in the late 80s. He was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident while driving home from a church in Joshua where he was the pianist. Soon after that his mother, Joyce Cyphers, instated the scholarship.
“I went to school with him but didn’t know him that well,” said Chin, “but to receive the scholarship was such an honor. I’m excited and looking forward to meeting the more recent recipients. We really just want to have a good time.
“I think it’s just a gift we can return to the community and honor his parents.”
