Spring Play Set for Alumni Weekend

The annual spring play at Southwestern Adventist University is scheduled for April 12 and 13 during SWAU’s Alumni Homecoming Weekend.
Brett Hadley will direct two short morality plays during Alumni Homecoming Week.
According to Play Director Brett Hadley, also communication department chair, the play will take place on Friday night and Sabbath. The exact times of the plays will be announced closer to the show date. Hadley says that they will present two short shows instead of the usual one long show.
“One is called ‘The Universal Fruit Factory’ and it is a parable about the basic plan of salvation,” says Hadley. “And then we’re going to do the ‘The Mad Merchant,’ which is a retelling of ‘The Merchant of Venice’ by William Shakespeare.”
Both plays are morality plays, dramas designed with a lesson involved. Hadley believes that if Adventist colleges and universities are going to do theater, then they should do theater that is unique to them: morality plays. This also allows them to be able to perform them on Sabbath.
So why should students, faculty and staff attend the plays?
“We’re making it a fun activity. We’re going towards a summer camp feel,” says Hadley. “There will be singing. Both will be fun comedies with some drama to them. It will be a different theater experience. It will be unique and fun.”
One thing that’s different is that they are doing tickets this year. Tickets are free, but you will need to get them in advance. There will be a box office and a phone number to call.
Reservations are not currently available. Look for posters and promotions on social media announcing when they will start doing reservations for tickets.
