SPIN Program Makes Biking Popular on Campus

The heat of Texas can often hinder students from getting place to place at Southwestern, but now there’s an alternative to walking in the heat, or just walking for that matter. A new program that started this semester has allowed Southwestern’s students to rent bikes for 50 cents.

James The, vice president for student services, arranged for 20 SPIN bikes to be brought to the campus. “I got the idea at an ENACTUS conference. There was a booth set up for the company and saw an opportunity for the students.”

The bikes work like this. If a student wants to use the bike, first they would need the SPIN bike app. Once the app is installed, they need to create an account with their swau.edu email. Using this email will get them the discounted price of 50 cents for using the bike. The bike has a lock on the back wheel. When the bike is paid for, the lock opens, and the bike can be ridden. If a student has ridden a bike to a location and chooses not to ride the bike back to where they found it, that’s fine, too. The men’s residence hall is in charge or wrangling them up and taking them back to their locations. The bikes have GPS locators on them, so the men can find them wherever they are.

In the future, Dean The plans on eventually getting bike racks for these bikes at all the buildings on campus. The bike racks should be showing up on campus next semester.
