Recital Showcases Student Talent

Southwestern’s music department hosted their first spring recital last night. The students exhibited a variety of talent and skill.

Halla Kalmansson, sophomore music major, sings Glitter and Be Gay from Candide. Written by Leonard Bernstein, the song is about a girl who attempts to find solace for her lost honor in earthly possessions.

Reuben Hall, freshmen music major, tunes his violin on stage. He performed Scherzando from Symphonie Espagnole, composed by E. Lalo. A scherzando is a type of light hearted and playful song.

Blanca Zuazua, sophomore nursing major, performed Andante in C, by W. A. Mozart. An andante is a musical piece written at an easy going tempo. It literally means “walking pace.”

Elaine McDonald, sophomore music major, and Enny Velasquez, freshmen music major, embrace during the final song of the evening, For Good from the musical Wicked, written by Stephen Schwartz. It is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz.

The musicians were accompanied by John Boyd, professor of music, and by Lori James, senior music major.

Other performers were Jonathan Dunchie, baritone; Peter Choque, violin; Ivana Ticar, soprano; Gage Rice, tenor saxophone; Lori James, flute; Patrick Knaubert, tenor; Ann Sauder, timpani; Sheena Arocho, contralto; Timothy Stowell, alto saxophone; and Leslie Castellanos, soprano.
