Southwestern Sabbath Slated for Saturday

Southwestern students worship in the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church

The first Southwestern Sabbath of the year takes place this Saturday, Sept. 1 at 11:30 a.m. in the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Southwestern Sabbath is a church service led by and directed at the Southwestern Adventist University family. Students lead song service, prayer and help in whatever way possible.

Pastor Russ Laughlin, Southwestern’s new vice president for spiritual development, will speak. His topic is “What are you doing here?” It is based on 1 Kings 19, when God spoke to Elijah in a whisper. The focus of the sermon is to learn how to listen when God speaks.

Theme for this school year is “None But Jesus.” It comes from what will be the University’s theme song this year. There are plans to introduce this theme both at vespers on Friday night, where Chaplain Islem Mattey will speak, and at the Southwestern Sabbath.

“Southwestern Sabbath is an opportunity for the University to worship God together,” said Laughlin. “We really want people to meet outside of assembly, and class time, and join together in worship. It’s aimed primarily at college students, but it’s for everyone.”
