Classical Guitar Concert Set for Oct. 6

Classical guitarist Alexej Muran will perform Oct. 6.

Alexej Muran, classical guitarist and alumnus of Southwestern Adventist University, will present a concert on Thursday, Oct. 6.  It will take place at the Wharton Auditorium in the Mabee Center at 7 p.m.  The performance is free to the public.

Born in Slovakia, Moran began to learn piano at age 6, but made the switch to classical guitar only a year later. It wasn’t long before he began performing concerts in Bratislava. When Muran was 14, he was accepted into the Bratislava Conservatory. While he was there, he studied under the world-renowned guitarist, Dr. Jozef Zsapka. During this time he also participated in master level classes with guitarists Alvaro Piery, Gabriel Guillen, Sergio Assad, John Duarte, Costas Cotiolis and many others.

Muran moved to Texas when he was 18 years old.  He continued to study guitar with Dr. Enrique Madriguera while attending classes at Southwestern Adventist University.  After graduating in 2003, he moved to Michigan and studied for a master degree in Old Testament Religion at Andrews University.  While there he taught classical guitar in the Andrews music department. Muran has also earned his Masters of Music in Classical Guitar Performance at Roosevelt University, where he studied under Denis Azabagic, and is now pursuing his PhD in Old Testament at Andrews University.

Muran has performed throughout Europe and the United States in venues such as the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, and Bass Hall in Fort Worth.   He has performed the Concerto de Aranjuez with the Brazos Symphony, has given master classes at the University of Texas Dallas, and has made recordings with Bartlett Recording.
