Why I Chose Southwestern

Why I Chose Southwestern

Tristan Mikesell

I believe going to Southwestern Adventist University is preparing me for my future.

I’m in college because I want to become a police officer. Interestingly enough, you don’t need to have a college degree to become a police officer. However, I believe I need a form of higher education.

You never truly know what tomorrow could bring. You’re drinking hot coffee, watching the football game on your nice soft couch one moment, and then out on the streets jobless the next.

I knew going to a private Adventist college was right for me; however I found it extremely hard picking one. Southwestern was the choice in the end, not only financially, but also for the teachers who care about you as a person, and not a number. I know when I heard that the first time I thought, “Who cares? I don’t want my teachers to be personal anyways.” But going through my first semester in college, I realized that it’s a gift.

So why go to a liberal arts college? Because while being a police officer may seem like a nice stable position to have, anything could happen. You could be shot, injured, or just get burned out. Either way, you would have to find another job sooner or later.

If I went to a technical training school, I’d be very limited to the types of jobs I could go after. Not to mention that maybe by the time I am looking for another job, my tastes will have changed. The degree in history that I have maybe isn’t what I would want to be doing now.

Going to a liberal arts college makes you better well rounded to the point where your job options are broader, and you may even be more competent in the eyes of the employers, than the people who went to a technical school just for that position. That’s why I know Southwestern is the best option for me.
