University Holds Annual Convocation
The Southwestern Brass Ensemble played, the professors, administrators and board members entered in traditional robes, and Southwestern Adventist University’s annual Convocation Service marked the official beginning of another school year. Students, faculty and staff met for the occasion Thursday, Sept. 4 in the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Amy Rosenthal, vice president for academic administration, offered the Invocation. Kenneth Shaw, Southwestern’s new president, welcomed students and the rest of the audience to another school year. That was followed by the University Singers, conducted by Jonathan Wall, leading the audience in a rousing rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Russ Laughlin, vice president for spiritual development, introduced the speaker, Larry Moore, alumnus from Southwestern, president of the Southwestern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and chairman of the University Board of Trustees. Moore followed the theme of “The Adventist Church in Today’s World,” reciting his struggles to get through school and encouraging students not to be discouraged and to depend on God to make success happen.
The dedicatory prayer by Jennifer Scott, senior pastor of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, concluded the event.
