Student Athletes Net Scholarships at 22nd Annual Hoops Classic

Saturday Jan. 28 marked the end of Southwestern’s 22nd annual Hoops Classic. This year’s event drew 48 teams from all over the United States and Puerto Rico. Each team displayed effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship making the games fun and exciting not only for the players but also the onlookers. Following is a list of teams who won in the various sections according to their rank:

First place in the men’s division:

  • Small school: Parkview Adventist Academy
  • Large school: Spencerville Adventist Academy

First place in the women’s division:

  • Small school: South Texas Adventist Academy
  • Large school: Takoma Adventist Academy

Second place in the men’s division:

  • Small school: Macedonian Christian Academy
  • Large school: Forest Lake Academy

Second place in the women’s division:

  • Small school: North Dallas Adventist Academy
  • Large school: Chisholm Trail Academy

Third place in the men’s division:

  • Small school: South Texas Christian Academy
  • Large school: Takoma Adventist Academy

Third place in the women’s division:

  • Small school: Oakwood Adventist Academy, junior varsity
  • Large school: Forest Lake Academy

In total, 48 teams were represented during this year’s Hoops Classic.

Sixteen students were selected as outstanding players for Hoops Classic and each received $1,000 scholarships:

  • Small School Women:
    • Ariadna Quinones, senior ( Sandia View Academy)
    • Arielle Madrid, 8th grade (Oakwood Adventist University)
    • Angelica Gonzalez, senior (South Texas Christian Academy)
    • Audrey Varona, 8th grade (North Dallas Adventist Academy)
  • Small School Men:
    • Josef Vassell, senior (South Texas Christian Academy)
    • Simeon Sagboje, sophomore (Takoma Academy)
    • Patrick Sagage, junior (Parkview Adventist Academy)
    • Ryan Martinez, junior (Macedonian Christian Academy)
  • Large School Women:
    • Essence Green, junior (Oakwood Adventist Academy)
    • Briane Mility, sophomore (Forest Lake Academy)
    • Dominique Allen, junior (Takoma Academy)
    • Dierra Duncan, sophomore (Chisholm Trail Academy)
  • Large School Men:
    • Jarell Warrior, junior (Collegedale Academy)
    • Christian Flaherty (Takoma Acadmey)
    • Hamilton Peralta, junior (Forest Lake Academy)
    • Milton Brown, junior (Spencerville Adventist Academy)

This year’s $4,000 scholarship for the most outstanding player went to two individuals:
