This year’s Saxon Lecture Series on the campus of Southwestern Adventist University will begin Saturday, September 3 with C. S. Lewis scholar Louis Markos.

Markos is a professor in English and Scholar in Residence at Houston Baptist University and holds the Robert H. Ray Chair in Humanities. He speaks extensively, generally on topics related to C. S. Lewis, but embracing more widely science, the arts, education and Christian apologetics. He is the author of three books on topics as wide ranging as why Christians should read the classics, the Victorian Era, and C. S. Lewis in a postmodern world.

His topic for Saturday afternoon’s presentation is “God and Science: Evidence for Design in the Universe.”  His premise is that mounting evidence from physics and astronomy point to a Creator outside time and space. The lecture begins at 4 p.m. in Wharton Auditorium.

The annual Saxon Lecture Series is the brainchild of George Saxon, retired physics professor from Southwestern, who promoted the series and supported it financially with the goal of promoting scholarly discussion on science and religion. Running since 2007, the series has featured topics such as Galileo, John Harvey Kellogg, evolution, dinosaurs, and the new atheism.

The second presentation in the series will be when Southwestern hosts Charles Scriven on Saturday, October 1. Charles Scriven is a recognized author, president of Kettering College of Medical Arts and chairman of the board of the Association of Adventist Forums and Spectrum magazine. His lecture is entitled “Darwinism and Parascience—A Non-Fundamentalist Critique.”
