Duerksen To Present Assembly Tomorrow

Storyteller Dick Duerksen will speak for assembly at tomorrow’s University Assembly at 1 p.m. Duerksen has the official title of storyteller for his work for Maranatha International.

His home is in Carmichael, Calif., but his job takes him all over the world to report on ongoing mission work.

Many of his stories are available online at Maranatha Mission Stories. Brenda coordinates Maranatha’s medical clinics and Dick uses his cameras, computer, and voice to share the story of God’s grace from Chobe to Choluteca. Click here to view some of Dick’s photography.

Duerksen is also heavily involved in the “One-Day Church” program hosted by Maranatha, a program responsible for building 1,600 churches around the world. Built around a standardized steel structure, the “One-Day Church” can be constructed for about $1,500. With a seating capacity of approximately 150, these churches answer the need for places of worship for thousands of congregations in countries such as Zambia, Brazil, India, and Haiti where congregations would otherwise go without a structure for years to come.

In April of 2009, a “One-Day Church” was built on Southwestern’s campus in the field next to Miller Hall so that students could personally see the process and finished project. Duerksen was on-hand at an assembly meeting that month to present the project to the students. The church remained on campus for several weeks before it was dedicated, dismantled, and dispatched on its own missionary journey.

Duerksen will also be presenting his experiences at the 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. church services at the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday, Jan. 14.
