Convocation Scheduled for Friday Night
Southwestern will hold its annual Convocation program on Friday evening, Aug. 30, 2013 at 8 p.m. in the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Convocation is the ceremonial beginning of a new academic year. It features stirring congregational singing, ensemble music, and a ceremonial entry and exit of the faculty and administration in full regalia.
The speaker for this year’s Convocation is John S. Nixon, a professor of theology and spirituality at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee. His Convocation Address is entitled, A Divine Calling.
Nixon was educated at Oakwood University, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Andrews University, where he received his D.Min.
Before accepting his present position, Nixon was a pastor for 34 years, serving in such major cities as New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. He was also pastor of college churches at Atlantic Union College, Oakwood University, and Southern Adventist University. His experience as a college instructor includes 13 years of teaching as an adjunct professor for AUC, Oakwood, Southern, and Andrews University.
In his preaching ministry, Nixon has travelled widely, leading evangelistic meetings, revivals, convocations, retreats, and camp meetings in various parts of the world. For seven years he served as associate director of the Ministerial Association of the North American Division. His articles have appeared in Ministry, Adventist Review, and Message Magazine, among other magazines. His first book, Redemption in Genesis, was published last year.
He and his wife have three children and two grandchildren.
