Community Celebrates STARfest

Last night marked the 26th Annual STARfest event in Keene. Hundreds of Southwestern Adventist University students came out to support the event and have a good time with members of the nearby community. Shortly after the festivities began, the weather took a turn and rain started. But despite that the event continued successfully and had a great turn out.

Southwestern’s acrobatic team perform twice at the fest. Daniel Semakula, a university alum said, “I’ve been watching SWAT perform over the last couple of years, and this may be one of my favorite routines.”

One of the first and most exciting events of the evening was the motorcycle performance by the Say No to Drugs Motorcycle Jump Team. Other activities that children and families participated in included games with prizes, hay rides, face painting, helicopter rides and multiple bounce houses. Students and community members of all ages were draped in costumes and various outfits. A variety of university clubs such as Enactus surrounded the venue with food booths and merchandise tables.

Pam Thomson, a Keene resident, dressed up with Mickey Mouse ears said, “My kids love STARfest, they’ve been reminding me about it for days now.”

This year’s 26th annual STARfest was hosted by the Keene Police Department and Fire Complex as a fun, child-friendly alternative to Halloween.
