Opinion: Social Distance = The End of Personal Space

Opinion: Social Distance = The End of Personal Space

A family of six prepares their dinner with nonstop excuse-me’s and can-you-pass-me-thats. Families all over are stuck indoors due to the current pandemic.

My husband and I are no longer living in the comfort of our apartment on campus. We are no longer able to continue with our own routine.

Instead, we live with four other people. That is a total of six people and an overly active pitbull. Our transition was from SWAU’s campus to a home with four out of the six people doing online classes and one who is unwilling to get off Netflix! Hard would be an understatement.

Jason and I never thought we would want to leave a five-bedroom two-story home for our 400-square-foot apartment as badly as we do after three weeks. It’s crazy to me how much we never appreciated our time and our routine. It is also extremely shocking to me that it is such a huge part of how we stay mentally sane and healthy.

It makes me really take a minute to stop. Stop and think, think of all the beautiful things God has made for us. This entire situation has taken all the worldly things out of our lives and really has us slowing down. Never have I seen so many families outside. Parents live their lives really putting their hopes and teachers to teach their kids and not they do not have that luxury they finally get to see their kid’s strength in an entire new way.

Why do we spend our days at home complaining about not being able to go to the movies and go get coffee when we have been given such a huge gift? I’m not saying that this entire situation doesn’t suck and I’m not here to say that this isn’t scary, because IT IS! I am saying that those problems will be there tomorrow so why are we making today just as miserable?

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34. The number of times God tells me to chill is insane, and if I am being honest, I’m insane for not listening. He promises me over and over that he had everything in his hands and that there is a day where I will not even remember the hard times that overtook my life.

“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Mathew 6:26

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘what shall we eat? or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘what shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:30-33

I really need to stop thinking of all the negatives in all the craziness and focus on the beautiful things God has given to us, because he knows what we truly need. What has God given you during all of this that you have truly needed?
