Opinion: The Pros and Cons of Learning Online
By Anonymous
Online classes are very similar to, and very different from face-to-face instruction. I’m my little experience so far, I’ve found plenty to like and some reasons to dislike online classes with SWAU.
First, it varies between teachers. Certain teachers cancel or turn certain assignments into extra credit and simplify other assignments, which we all can be grateful for. In certain classes we join an online forum similar to FaceTime called Zoom, and we listen to lectures from the teachers. This takes place in the more complicated classes dealing with math and sciences. I like how the online classes are easier, and more independent.
Now I can turn in all the assignments whenever I want by a specific due date at the end of the semester. I also don’t have to wake up every day to make it to class. I just need to make it to my Zoom meeting for an hour or so and then the rest of the day is my time. It feels quick and efficient.
But face-to-face instruction with SWAU also has its advantages. While it’s true you have to wake up and be presentable to class, you get face-to-face interaction with no confusion. While everything has quicker due dates, assignments are trickier, etc., you get to experience help from the teachers in person, and get to help and be with classmates, enriching your SWAU and overall college experience. Not to mention, there are also plenty of Internet mishaps and circumstances that could mess up your assignments and the lectures you’re listening to online.
I know SWAU as a school is doing what can be done and what is necessary with the present events. However, I love being at SWAU and having face to face instruction, and hope that we can go back to that format this fall.
