Assembly Opinion: Immigration

Last week, James The and the Student Services Department asked students to respond to several thought-provoking questions in light of Constitution Week. For the next few weeks we will be sharing some of those responses. Opinions are those of the authors, and not necessarily those of Southwestern Adventist University or The Southwesterner.

In light of the Constitution, share your thoughts on immigration and the family separation crisis.

This statement really caught my eye as I was looking at the options and what I should write about. I get the fact that everyone should be documented to live here in the U.S. But to physically take people out of this country because they aren’t documented, but have lived here since their children were born, and are hard workers, is definitely not fair. They aren’t doing anything wrong beyond providing a life for their families.

This country was founded on the concept of “… one nation under God.” What happened to “indivisible with liberty and justice for all”? Taking parents away from their kids and putting them in what amounts to cells is cruel. No one should have to go through that pain. This country is going downhill if it thinks it’s okay for anyone to carry around guns as long as they have a permit, but it’s also okay to rip families apart.

I do not think this country is handling any of this correctly. They make it hard to get a citizenship to those who are trying, and they want to say that the undocumented people living here are taking jobs away from citizens. NO they are not. People living here are too lazy to get up off their couches from watching Netflix or sports to realize that it isn’t that hard to find a job anyway, they are too focused on being lazy to realize the opportunities they could make for themselves.
