“Now I Feel That Miracles Do Happen”

Some believe that everything in life happens for a reason. This saying couldn’t have been truer for Samson Sembeba, current Student Association president. Ever since God brought him to Southwestern, He hasn’t left Sembeba alone. God continues to bless him in marvelous ways, leading him into a position that Sembeba himself had never considered.  

A junior theology major, Sembeba had no intention of applying for the position in the SA at all. It wasn’t until three people urged him to run the morning final applications were due that his mind-set changed.

“When the first person came up to me, I laughed it off as a joke. But after the third person spoke to me, I came down to two options,” says Sembeba. “One: apply and pray about it and if it’s not right for me don’t run for the position. Or two: don’t apply for it and regret it later. So, I applied.”

After he applied, he gave it some thought, prayer, consulted his mother for solid advice and in the end decided to stick with the position.

The position has proven to be a blessing to Sembeba. He is learning how to lead a team and in the process, how to obtain a Christ-like character.

“I’ve learned many things from being SA president so far. I’ve realized what it means to be a leader and understand that the higher one’s position is, the more of a servant they should become.”

The experiences he’s receiving as SA president and involving himself in many different aspects is helping him grow into the man he believes God wants him to be.  Also, the team and sponsors he acquired on this journey has helped him greatly.

Born in Three Rivers, Michigan, Sambeba heard about Southwestern Adventist University from a recruiter who came there. However, even after he applied to come to Southwestern, he had second thoughts. It wasn’t until after Russ Laughlin, vice president of spiritual development, offered him a job working at Spiritual Life and Development that Sembeba was convinced God wanted him to go to SWAU. 

“As soon as I walked onto the campus, I fell in love,” Sembeba says. “I felt a part of something bigger than myself.”

In addition to his SA position, Sembeba also got the opportunity to represent the students of SWAU at the recent Gala event. He can’t believe the things God has helped him accomplish in a short amount of time.

“If someone would’ve told me I would be in this position two years ago, I would’ve laughed,” he says. “Now I feel that miracles do happen. I believe that God is in the business of changing people.”

Sembeba feels honored and humbled obtaining this opportunity and is excited to see where else God will lead him. “All my life I’ve been searching for God’s will for my life, and my goal in life is to find that.”
