Opinion: Southwestern Needs More Sports Teams

One of the many features that makes Southwestern Adventist University great is its athletic program. However, I believe Southwestern needs to expand that program and add more sports that students can participate in. Right now, Southwestern only offers men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and gymnastics. All of those are great sports, but the incorporation of sports like football, baseball, or even floor ball would make the University’s athletic program that more original.

Sports are a great way for students to be involved in the university. Not only do sports build and reveal character, they also help students form friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Incorporating more sports into the university’s athletic program would give students more options to choose from.

Several students I’ve asked have said that the only reason they’re not in sports is because Southwestern doesn’t have the sports they want to participate in, like football or baseball. Participating in sports and forming a team is part of a great university experience for many students. So why not make that possible for many more students by incorporating a broader variety of sports to Southwestern’s athletic program?

Having more sports options, also gives students greater opportunities to showcase what Southwestern is really about. Through sports, opposing teams and coaches can see the great values and character of our student athletes. Sports are a great way to show others the great love of God.

So I encourage our University to expand its athletic program and include more sports. Not only will expanding our sport options give students more choices of what sport they want to be a part of, but it will also enable student athletes to get the name of Southwestern out there, and show people what the school is all about.
