Lightning causes fire at KJCR
News
Lighting struck KJCR 88.3 last night while station manager Randy Yates was working late in his office. “I could feel the pop under my feet when the lightning struck, and then my computer went down and some of the lights went out.”
Yates went to check the breaker box, and noticed a wood smoke smell. He then pulled down the attic steps and saw bright orange flames. He quickly left the building and called 911.
The Keene Fire Department and departments from Cleburne, Alvarado, and Briar Oak sent trucks to the scene. Yates says he explained the situation and the firefighters quickly put out the fire, running a water hose through to the attic.
Keene Fire Marshal Jacob Hopps confirmed that the fire began in the attic from what appeared to be natural causes, most likely lightning. “There was fire and heavy smoke coming from the south gable when we arrived. We were able to push the fire back, and then the Alvarado Fire Department provided horizontal ventilation through the gable, which relieved a lot of the heat and smoke, and allowed us to extinguish the fire.”
Most of the damage was to the two on-air booths and one office. Equipment damage has yet to be assessed.
“I’m thankful that I was here when this happened, because we could have lost the whole building and all of the radio personnel and communication faculty could have lost their entire offices,” said Yates.
The radio station is currently off the air.

I'm so thankful that the damage wasn't any worse, and especially that Randy escaped unharmed.

For anyone reading this. The station has been back online since late friday evening on the 4th. It is in a temporary setup until we can get repairs done to the studio.

Isn't having firefighters from three seperate stations a little bit overkill? Or is it not the same as too many cooks in a kitchen?
Also, God was totally in control of the situation. Lets be thankful, praise God, and continue to serve Him.

It looks to me like a good ole SDA fire. When ever we forsake the promtings of our Holy God to turn away from worldly items when he is calling us to do so, He will take drastic messures. I am from Battle Creek. I have heard all the stories.
Why not make a valid attempt to let go of the worlds rythems and seek out fantastic songs of praise and worship. There is so much to be found and so many blessings we are missing and neglecting to provide at this station. Please consider the change.

I have to say I always love it when overly righteous observers blaim misfortunes on acts of God. KJCR has witnessed and will continue to witness to many in the community despite someone who doesn't even live in the area thinks. I actually believe this was the act of Satan wanting to destory something that God has been using to draw others to Him. I love KCR for all they do and can't wait to see what promising future the Lord has in store for them. God bless you all!

I would rather have too many firefighters than not enough -- many thanks to our prompt and fearless firefighters!

Everyone knows that the firefighters have plenty to do. They must have had a malfunction with their XBOX 360 online gaming capabilities. Everytime I go see my brother at his job
in the fireball, they are all playing happy grabass or in a heated debate over a game of Halo. The lightening must have short circuited thier XBOXES. I am glad 4 departments showed up to put out a fire that could have been managed with a garden hose. Good use of our tax dollars. How many gallons of diesel did those engines burn? They burned up more than that fire.

I was a student of SWAU. After I came back to my country, I am used to listen to KJCR through internet. I hope KJCR would come back soon.
