Missions Emphasis Week Begins on Monday

For an entire week, Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, students across the Southwestern campus will be hearing a recurring theme: United in Missions.

Because Southwestern Adventist University’s mission is to spread the gospel to the world, the annual Missions Emphasis Week is designed to highlight the people who are doing it already. It is also intended to tell students about Southwestern’s student missionaries and to inform how they can serve as well.

Many activities are planned to encourage current students at Southwestern help their fellow students abroad. Boxes are designated for the student missionaries where the students can put in letters, cards, candy, food or words of encouragement. Also, prayer at the pool is scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7:30 a.m. and a jam session on Tuesday and Thursday at the pool at 11:45 a.m. Here students can gather and prayer for their peers and have a good time together.

Missions Emphasis Week is similar to Week of Prayer only during the last three days of the week. The difference between the two is that Mission Emphasis Week is a theme instead of an event. Classes and work won’t be affected during this week. Three booths will be set up in the Chan Shun Centennial Library in front of Meadows Gallery.

Booth 1: Who’s doing it. This booth will tell people about those students who are currently serving in the mission field and what they are doing.

Booth 2: Your involvement. This booth will inform students what they can do about missions and how they can join. Leonard Quaile, education director for the Guam-Micronesian Mission of Seventh-day Adventists, will be at this booth to talk about the students who are involved in missions in the Micronesian Islands and how others can join.

Booth 3: ADRA Supports. Those who can’t afford to go abroad and be missionaries can visit this booth and find out how they can be involved where they are. Southwestern and ADRA are working on a mission together called Free Indeed, which is an initiative to combat human trafficking. This mission is based on John 8:36 and designed to set those in bondage free, both literally and figuratively.
