Meet the Candidates: Part I

With Student Association elections upon us, the Southwesterner thought it might be a good idea for readers to get a chance to hear from our candidates. We’ve broken up our interviews into two articles, with the first one here focusing on four students running for president. (Questions and interview by Victory Rigdon; editing by Andrew Austin)

  1. What is the first SA event that you would like to see happen next semester?

Hugs to the homeless and tacos afterwards.

  1. Would you rather be ugly and live forever or attractive and die in a year?

Attractive and die in a year.

  1. What do you do in your spare time?

Read, community service and talking to people. I love to be around people.

  1. Do you study in advance or wait until the last minute to do your assignments?

I study in advance because it’s easier and more helpful for me to not procrastinate.

  1. What do you view as the top priority of the position you are running for?

My concern as president is to care for the students’ needs; to hear and pay attention to what they see as important.

  1. What is the first SA event that you would like to see happen next semester?

I would love to do a big event on center campus with food trucks and ice cream or dessert trucks! I would love to have a life-size board game and a live band like Contagious Faith and “appropriate” line dancing. This would be a place where new students can mingle and old students can catch up with each other.

  1. Would you rather be ugly and live forever or attractive and die in a year?

I would rather be ugly and live forever, because at least my mom will still think I’m beautiful.

  1. What do you do in your spare time?

I love to play soccer in my spare time and I also love to camp! I also love to play my guitar, sing and act. I guess I love staying busy.

  1. Do you study in advance or wait until the last minute to do your assignments?

It depends on what it is. I never procrastinate when it comes to eating, but sadly I always put off doing my laundry until I’m down to my last outfit.

  1. What do you view as the top priority of the position you are running for?

My thoughts are to allow God to use me in being an effective leader. I want to make sure all the students on campus feel loved and comfortable enough to make suggestions and attend events. I believe that it all starts with communication between SA members and the student body. No one should feel left out.

  1. What is the first SA event that you would like to see happen next semester?

Knowing that Student Association is a team, I will first consult with my Social VP. As a tradition Southwestern has the famous “Handshake” or “Fist Bump” and I will as usual start off with that, but we will definitely have some new ideas integrated.

  1. Would you rather be ugly and live forever or attractive and die in a year?

I will go with ugly and live forever. How many times do we see famous beautiful people from the outside and be ugly in the inside. Beauty is surely a measure not only in the physical aspect. Plus, at the end of the day, life is beautiful and it doesn’t matter if the person is ugly or attractive.

  1. What do you do in your spare time?

In my spare time I practice my favorite sport which is obviously soccer! I am also into reading a lot and I always try to make time for that. It is just something that allows me to take a moment and relax. As a college student I also try to give myself some time to nap when I can. Who doesn’t like that, right?

  1. Do you study in advance or wait until the last minute to do your assignments?

Studying and working in advance is something everyone should practice so I do things in advance. Now there are times when I have left things until the end and that is not a good feeling when you are rushed, so I prefer to do things beforehand.

  1. What do you view as the top priority of the position you are running for?

Student body, simple as that. Each and everyone of us have an important role in this institution and I want to help every student understand and fulfill that role.

  1. What is the first SA event that you would like to see happen next semester?

During the weekend I would like to have a Friday night prayer vigil for the new students, current students, staff and faculty and the new year, a Sabbath university church program and a Sunday event. This weekend would set the tone for the new school year.

  1. Would you rather be ugly and live forever or attractive and die in a year?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It’s subjective. Living forever in this world would be eternal misery. I don’t understand what this question has to do with elections. Can’t I just be average and live half of forever?

  1. What do you do in your spare time?

I cut hair, work on personal business projects, research, watch documentaries, make music, hang out with the guys, attempt to work out and sleep.

  1. Do you study in advance or wait ’til the last minute to do your assignments?

Depends of the weight of the assignment.

  1. What do you view as the top priority of the position you are running for?

School spirit and pride.
