“Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.” You hear this as you walk in 15 minutes late to church. You lean over and whisper to your friend: “What did I miss?” They reply: “Chapter 1-138 of Psalms.” Performing Artist Marquis Laughlin travels around the nation reciting books of the Bible from memory. Hi His next stop? Southwestern.

Marquis Laughlin is the founder of Acts of the Word, a non-profit, non-denominational ministry devoted to changing people’s lives through the word of God. You can read more about his ministry on his website. He is coming to Southwestern to recite the book of Revelation from memory.

As Pastor Russ Laughlin, vice president for spiritual development, consulted with his team of student chaplains in the Spiritual Life and Development Department, SLAD, regarding this year’s speakers, the “must have” speaker was Marquis Laughlin (no relation to the pastor). Although bringing in speakers is a costly affair, Pastor Laughlin thinks it is a worthwhile one.

“When was the last time you heard anyone repeat the entire book of Revelation from memory?” Pastor Laughlin asks.

Melissa Depaiva, mission coordinator for SLAD, adds, “It’s not often that you get to hear more than a few verses of the Bible read to you in church, much less a whole book of the Bible. I hope the students, including myself, will capture the scenes in the book of Revelation in a way never experienced before.”

laughlinThis will likely be the first time any of Southwestern’s students have ever heard an entire book of the Bible recited from memory.

Marquis Laughlin is scheduled to speak at 7:30 on Dec. 4 at Friday Night Worship, which is Southwestern’s weekly opening of the Sabbath worship service. It will be held in the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church.
