NBA Veteran Speaks for Assembly

Thursday’s assembly at Southwestern featured former professional basketball player Maurice Evans. During his 10-year NBA career, Evans played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, and Orlando Magic. He is now CEO and founder of Access Brand Management, and his talk was entitled “Clarity, Comfort and Confidence: Three Essential Tools to Achieve Every Level of Success in Life.”

During the assembly, Evans shared how different intersections in his life all led to him finding God.   He talked about how a person can have all the accolades in life and pretend that everything is good, but if a person is not good with God, their family or themselves, all those accolades and money won’t be enjoyable.

Evans told a story on how he put his trust in God and he put him in the place where he wanted to be his whole life.

“I had just been traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Orlando magic,” said Maurice Evans to the students in the audience. “It was about four games in and the coach called me into his office and said told me that he wasn’t sure if I had what it took to play in the NBA. He told me I was too small and not quick enough.

“Without thinking I said thank you to the coach. He looked at me weird and asked me why I said thank you. By this time I had put everything in God’s hand subconsciously and led him lead me. I told the coach that he was the first person to critique my play and I was thankful for that. I also told them that whenever he put me into play I would give it my all, whether it would be for three or 30 minutes. I would cheer from the bench whenever my teammates were out there. He told me that we would take it one game at a time and if he liked me he would play me more. Some time passed and I eventually became a starter in for the Orlando Magic all because I put my trust in God.”
