Close to Home, On His Own

Josh Ramirez writes down a new song for his musical group, Glory 2 Him.

“I’ve wanted to attend Southwestern Adventist University ever since I heard of it,” says Josh Ramirez, a freshman theology major. “I wanted something that was close to home but still have the chance of having the experience of living on my own and having that college experience.”

When Ramirez first arrived here at SWAU, he knew he wanted to study theology.

“I love doing ministry and it’s something fulfilling,” says Ramirez. “It makes me feel like I am doing something to better this world. Also, I get to show people that God is their Lord and Savior.”

Ramirez is the youngest out of three brothers. His brothers did attend college but didn’t finish. So when Ramirez graduates, he will be the first in his family to do so.

“I’m going to be very proud of myself and happy,” says Ramirez. “In a sense I’m not just doing this for myself, but for my family as well. It’s going to be an awesome moment when I get that diploma, because I will know that it’s not because of me, but because God helped me.”

Ramirez plays the guitar, bass guitar, and the ukulele whenever he can borrow one from his friends. He is also one of the founding members of the Band Glory 2 Him, which recently released an album entitled “Remade.”

“It took us about six month to make the CD,” says Ramirez. “We set up a little home studio and we’d go there almost every day after school to write and making music. But we were able to get it done.”

Ramirez uses the musical talents he has to help out the gospel choir, United Praise, as a bass guitar player. Since he hasn’t played much gospel music on the bass guitar, he had a hard time at first but so far has learned a lot.

“At first it was really hard,” said Ramirez. “The base lines in gospel are crazy nothing I’m used to. Also, how the music is put together is different but, I am learning and I am getting better each time I play.”
