88.3 The Journey’s biannual Sharathon began yesterday. The local Christian radio station has set a goal of $100,000 with a timeline of three days to reach it. Staff members, volunteers, and radio personalities have come together for this event as they do so every spring and fall. The donations raised will go toward the station’s every-day expenses for the next six months.

This is the station’s eighth Sharathon. Wanda Agee, office manager and wife of general manager Mike Agee, claims from experience that the event grows each year with its volunteer list and gift sizes. Listeners who have been touched by the station offer their time to answer phone calls of donors.

Debbie Hainey has been a long-time listener and volunteer for the Journey. The shared emotional connection to the music and sense of community is what keeps her coming back each year to help. Hainey has a lyrical side herself and wrote a short poem for the event. “Three years, spring and fall. Call in and give Jesus your all,” she says with a smile.

Husband and wife Jessie and Louis McKee are volunteering at Sharathon for their second time. They enjoy giving back to the Journey and see Sharathon as a time for fellowship with each other and friends. A part they look forward to is hearing what the other volunteers have been up to since the previous Sharathon.

Local restaurants have also taken notice of this fundraiser and sponsor meals for the volunteers. Cleburne’s Royal Pizza has become a staple lunch to Sharathon. They provided an array of pizzas to the workers and volunteers Tuesday afternoon.

This is also one of the few times during the year that the radio station goes live. Listeners can tune in via the Internet or radio to hear updates from Sharathon and the progress made toward the end fiscal goal.
