The Student Association was able to bring a charming 1950s style twist to bowling last Saturday night. There are not that many activities to do off-campus that are relatively inexpensive and wholesome, but one pastime that seems to reoccur on our yearly schedule is bowling.

Every year for the past several years, the student body at Southwestern has taken a trip to Altamesa Lanes in Fort Worth. With gracious staff and a clean facility, relaxing and unwinding become second nature. Bowling is a pretty standard event at Southwestern, but that does not mean that it should not be a memorable and unique experience contending with other more elaborate events that the school holds. So this year to make sure that all events show the same level of excellence, the student association decided to put a little spin on it with a 1950s flare! There were even prizes for the best bowlers and for the guys and girls who looked the most authentic.

Brisa Ramirez, junior communication and English major, wore a black and white poodle skirt tied together with a classic collared shirt and retro headband. She was one of the four ladies who won “Best Dressed: Female.” She says, “Everyone looked so cute! It was no wonder the judges couldn’t pick just one winner.”

Gerardo Garcia, senior history major, was one of two winners for “Best Dressed: Male.” His 1950’s “greaser” style was inspired by Fonzie from Happy Days. “I honestly didn’t expect to win but I was really happy when I found out I did,” he said.

Students showed up and dressed out for this fun-filled retro blast. From leather jackets and bandannas to cardigans and headbands, each student put their best foot forward to dive in and do the “twist.” Robert Leslie, sophomore theology major, said, “It was a great time to bond.”
