Three Receive Extra Mile Awards
Susan Gardner, professor of English, Susan Grady, administrative assistant to president, and Islem Mattey, campus chaplain, were named by Southwestern Adventist University as recipients of this year’s Extra Mile Awards. The announcement was made during the annual Faculty Service Awards banquet on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the Petroleum Club in Fort Worth. Faculty, staff and their families attended the sumptuous dinner, followed by service awards for 25 faculty and staff.
Joe Alway, Elizabeth Bowser, Kip Bowser, Miguel Espinosa, Ann Marie Jobity, Islem Mattey, Jorge Rivera, Roberto Valencia and Karl Wilcox received recognition for five years of service. Murray Cox, James The, Robert Thompson and Greg Wicklund were ten-year recipients. Jerry Chi, Michael England, Larry Turner, Cathy Turner and Janelle Williams were honored for 15 years of service. Twenty-year recipients were Tina Bottsford, Donna Morrison and Lolita Valdez. Patty Norwood, assistant vice president for student financial services, was honored for 25 years of service.
The banquet concluded with Gardner, Grady and Mattey receiving the Extra Mile Awards. Susan Gardner was honored for her “creative teaching” as demonstrated in her establishment of The Write Spot and the summer seminars on writing for teachers. Islem Mattey was honored for her “exemplary service” as campus chaplain and her skillful leadership as acting director of student affairs. Her citation mentioned her “pastor’s heart.” Susan Grady was honored for her “determined resourcefulness,” and her commitment to making sure that Southwestern Adventist University always offers outstanding service to students, parents, and visitors.
